We all know how dependent we have become on our smartphones. We’ve come to grips with the fact that our lives are run by the small device, and by now admit that what we call smartphones are actually much more than a phone. In fact, these small devices have become so engrained in our lives that we often take them for granted. What could possibly be the next phase for smartphones? What device could be bold enough to extend today's smartphone role into the next phase of technology and culture? Companies like Apple ($AAPL) and Motorola ($MSI) agree that the next phase device to revolutionize our culture will be wearable tech. Apple is making an early move with the Apple watch. Motorola is venturing into the space with a new wearable camera device. Though sleek and innovative, these devices thus far remain confined within a specific role, and though they will probably add another technological dimension into our lives, they probably will not revolutionize the way we live. So what will? According to Adam Pruden from Frog Design, the post smartphone era will integrate wearable technology with what leading companies such as DHL, Google and Amazon.com ($AMZN) see as the future – drones. Drones are built on the same technology as smartphones, using similar microprocessors and sensors, and it is predicted that wearable drones will be the next "smartphone" revolution by 2030. Today, for many hobbyists as well as corporations and even governments, both smartphones and drones serve the same purpose and role: to capture events, moments and surroundings. The role of drones, as with smartphones, will vary from: identifying routes for hikers and tourists, use as jewelry or accessorizing, providing notice to open an umbrella because rain is on the way, and much more. The Missing Piece of the Puzzle
The missing piece of the puzzle regarding drones is the communications factor. In order for drones to be integrated on such a daily level, communications must be embedded, and be an integral part of any drone. Drones will have to communicate with humans – primarily their owners, other people, other drones and objects. Each facet of such communications requires the ability to both communicate on different levels simultaneously, as well as interacting with different types of communications, including HD video, voice and data – and all this while on-the-move.
Wireless Communications for Post-Smartphone Drones
The most common wireless communication infrastructures are: WiFi, WiFi MESH, Cellular and 4G Collaborative MESH. WiFi and Cellular depend on local wireless infrastructure and are mostly found in urban areas which makes them restricted in terms of perimeter making them obsolete in rural and remote areas where no infrastructure is available. Furthermore, in overcrowded events, most public communications networks cannot handle the demand and intensity and collapse. WiFi MESH may provide an improvement, but it will sometimes lack the flexibility and robustness that is required in order to communicate on multi-level platforms. The ability to for all communication types to be conducted simultaneously and on multi-level approaches such as broadcasting, multi-casting and unicasting modes within urban N-LOS (non- line-of-site) environments while on-the-move is achievable via 4G Collaborative MESH topology and technology.
The Need for Smooth Wireless Communications in the Post-Smartphone Future
We all need reliable, smooth, cutting edge communications solutions; whether for mission-critical-communications that include life-saving missions, business transactions that contribute to the global economy, or just everyday tasks for which we have all come to depend on our smartphones. But there is yet another aspect that makes the drone revolution depend on smart, smooth and cutting edge communications – drone personality. Apparently, post-smartphone wearable drones can and may be given a "personality" by their owners. Of course, this will be based on the design of the drone, interaction of the drone with other drones and interaction with people – all of which are based on wireless communications technology making the next technology revolution a cultural one.
